Black Family Structure – 7 Benefits of Black Marriage

The black family in America is being attacked from all corners by systemic agendas like mass incarceration and feminism that seek to break up the black family structure. According to the US Census Bureau, 29 percent of black households in America are led by a married couple. This lack of black married households more greatly affects Southern states like Alabama mainly due to the mass incarceration of black men in the region. For example, blacks make up 26.6 percent of Alabama’s population while blacks only make up 13.2 percent of the nation overall.

There are many reasons why marriage within the black population is unpopular, but these reasons are much too divisive to discuss here. Still, to truly grasp the importance of black marriage, though, we will need to take a quick look at some of the positives of marriage that most black households are missing out on.

7 Benefits Of Black Marriage

Here are 7 benefits of black marriage:

  • Married couples build more wealth on average than singles or cohabitating couples.

  • Marriage reduces poverty for disadvantaged women and their children.

  • Marriage increases the likelihood that parents have good relationships with their children.

  • Marriage seems to be associated with better health among minorities and the poor.

  • Married mothers have lower rates of depression than do single or cohabitating mothers.

  • Married men earn more money than do single men with similar education and job histories.

  • Marriage appears to reduce the risk that adults will be either perpetrators or victims of crime.

The Conclusion – the black family structure is needed so that our kids can be defined by what we want them to be, not what a society wants them to be.
